Instructor – Mrs. Rood

November 19th-December 2nd
Happy Thanksgiving!  Only two lessons taught so that you can have some family time over the holiday!
If you have any questions or concerns, please note that I will be out of town and out of touch from Friday, November 21st until Sunday, November 30th.
In class we practiced solving two-step word problems using diagrams to help visualize the problems.  Our second lesson introduced finding an average number.
Any Thanksgiving themed work that is sent home is optional.  Students can earn bonus stars and possibly extra credit.

HOMEWORK

  • Lessons 49 & 50 Mixed Practice
  • Timed Tests 49 & 50
  • Investigation 5
  • Test in Envelope
  • OPTIONAL – XTRAmath.org – 3 sessions on 3 different days until program is completed
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
November 12th-18th
Progress Reports were emailed out yesterday, November 12th.
In class we classified quadrilaterals, solved problems about a fraction of a group by diagraming the fractions, simplified mixed measures (1 foot 2 inches = 14 inches) and wrote numbers using expanded notation and standard notation.
HOMEWORK
  • Timed Tests 45-48
  • Mixed Practice 45-48
  • XTRAmath.org – 3 sessions on 3 different days until program is completed.

October 29th – November 4th

Yesterday’s class mainly focused on fractions.  The students drew fractions, compared fractions, identified fractions and mixed numbers on a number line and wrote quotients as mixed numbers instead of using remainders.
The class was so focused and successful that we were able to play math games for prizes!
HOMEWORK
  • Timed Tests 37-40
  • Mixed Practice 37-40
  • Investigation 4 – Students will need a compass to complete the investigation.
  • XTRAmath.org – 3 sessions on 3 different days until program is completed.
Progress Reports will be sent via email by Tuesday.

October 15th-21st

In class we reviewed how to multiply by 10’s and 100’s using mental math strategies, defined geometry terms for lines, angles and polygons, and compared fractions to percents and dollars.

Homework

  • Mixed Practice Lessons 29-32
  • Investigation 3
  • Timed Tests 29-32
  • XTRAmath.org – 3 times on 3 different days

October 8th – 14th

Yesterday we reviewed: how to list factors of whole numbers using a t-chart, long division with remainders, how to read scales, and measuring time.  There was one concept that needed more practice than the others. Elapsed time problems using an analog clock proved to be a challenge for most of the students.
By Tuesday, you will receive the final math grade for quarter one.  The test and homework that was sent home yesterday will be the first grades for quarter 2.
HOMEWORK
  • Test 3 – Students must not receive any assistance with the test.  Please read the sticker on the envelope.
  • Timed Tests 25-28
  • Lessons 25-28 Mixed Practice Problems
  • XTRAmath.org – 3 times on 3 different days

October 1st – 6th

Yesterday we took our first timed graded fact timed test in class.  It will be included in the Timed Test portion of the grades.  If your child made below a 75, they can correct the problems to bring it up to a 75.  These will be returned on October 8th.
In class, we discussed the operations of arithmetic and story problems related to each operation.  This brought us to using parentheses and the associative property of addition and multiplication.   I told the class to refer back to the book to review the new terminology we introduced this week.
The lessons also touched on fractions and how to determine whether or not it is equal to one half.
Finally, we started to introduce Divisibility rules and division with remainders.
After I grade the tests returned to me in class, I will send updated progress reports.
Homework:
  • Timed Tests Lessons 21-24
  • Mixed Practice Lessons 21-24
  • XTRAmath.org – 3 sessions on 3 different days

September 24th – 30th

Yesterday our lessons focused on multiplication and division.  If your child has not mastered their multiplication facts, now is the time to have them get them memorized.  Math fact fluency will help your child not struggle as much when solving long division and multi-step math problems.  If your child has them mastered already, long division will be a much easier when it is introduced later this year.
HOMEWORK
  • Timed Tests 17-20
  • Lessons 17-20 Mixed Practice Problems
  • Investigation 2 – Fraction Papers are attached to the Timed Tests
  • Test 2 – Tests are to be completed independently – See sealed envelope
  • XTRAmath.org  – 3 times on 3 different days
New Progress Reports will be sent out after Test 2 has been graded by me and entered into the grade book.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

September 17th-23rd

Yesterday we reviewed multiplication and story problems.  I informed the students that progress reports will be going home via email sometime prior to the next class.  If your child is missing any assignments, they can be made up and turned in as a late assignment.

Homework:

  • Lessons 13-16 Mixed Practice
  • Lessons 13-16 Timed Tests
  • XTRAmath.org – 3 sessions on 3 different days
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

September 10th – 16th

In class we continued working on addition and subtraction problems and story problems.  Lesson 12 introduced lines and number lines.

Students have their first Investigation this week and their first Test.

There are workbook pages to use when completing the Investigation 1.  They are included in the Timed Test packet.

The first test was sent home in a sealed envelope.  A sticker with Test Expectations is on the envelope.

The test envelope contains:

  • Test 1 Timed Test – Your child completes the entire page and records how long it takes to complete the problems.
  • Test 1 with Work page attached – Students must show their work on the sheet provided.  They may also write on the test, but answers should be written on the sheet provided.
  • Return Envelope – After your child completes the test, the Timed Test, Test and work page should be sealed in the envelope and signed by an adult.
  • A sticker with Test Expectations is on the original envelope.
