Happy Thanksgiving!  Only two lessons taught so that you can have some family time over the holiday!  This means our Class Assignment Schedule will be off for the remainder of the school year.

If you have any questions or concerns, please note that I will be out of town and out of touch from Friday, November 21st until Sunday, November 30th.

Any Thanksgiving themed work that is sent home is optional.  Students can earn bonus stars.

October 1st – 7th

Assessment 3 was sent home yesterday.  Your child completed the assessment in class last week.

Lesson 21 continued with rounding numbers to the nearest 10.  Some friends were still having a challenging time rounding to the nearest 10.  If your child is struggling, have them write the two numbers that it could be rounded to.  They can draw a number line or say our cheer that helps us remember when to round up or down.
Cheer
0,1,2,3,4 – Keep that number on the floor.
5,6,7, 8, 9  – Bump that number up that line!
Lesson 22 introduced thirds with folding squares and drawing thirds using squares, circles and equilateral triangles.
Lesson 23 had the students problem solving with coins for regrouping tens and ones.  The problems were modeled with dimes and pennies.
Lesson 24 introduced multiplication by modeling how repeated addition can be replaced with multiplication.
Homework
  • Meeting Strips 21-24
  • Workbook pages 21B, 22B, 23B, 24B
  • XTRAmath.org – 3 sessions on 3 different days

September 24th – September 30th

Yesterday the students covered several different concepts:
  • Lesson 17 started out folding squares into halves, fourths, and eights.  We then bridged the squares to fractions.
  • Lesson 18 had the students use counters to show the sums of ten.
  • Lesson 19 had the students use thermometers to find the nearest 10.
  • Lesson 19 also introduced congruent lines.
  • Lesson 20 was an assessment.  I will check them this week and bring them to class on Wednesday.
Homework
  • Workbook pages 17b, 18b, 19b and a page using pattern blocks
  • Flashcard practice – All 4 squares should be initialed
  • Meeting Strips number 17-20
  • XTRAmath.org – 3 times on 3 different days

September 17th – 23rd

Yesterday we continued working on different forms of addition and modeling addition and subtraction word problems.   This week we practiced double plus one addition problems and adding 10 addition problems.  The word stories were modeled with counters included some, some more word stories and some, some went away word stories.

Homework:

  • Meeting Strips for Lessons 13-16
  • Lessons 13-16 side B workbook pages
  • XTRAmath.org  – 3 sessions on 3 different days
  • Assessment 2
Parents, please remember that you are responsible for grading your child’s work.  Your child brings the work back in to me after it is graded, so that I may see areas of concern.   Thank you.

September 10th – 16th

Thank you for having all the students arrive before 9 AM!  It made a big difference, especially since we had safety drills during class.

In class, we had fun exploring odd and even numbers, finding the relative worth of pattern blocks, dividing squares into halves and fourths, and finished with a lesson counting dimes and nickels.

Card stock pattern blocks were sent home just incase you do not have pattern blocks at your home.

This week, additional timed test were sent home.  These are not mandatory.  Students may earn extra stars if they complete them and bring them back.

Homework:

  • Meeting Strips for Lessons 9-12
  • Lessons 9-12 side B workbook pages
  • XTRAmath.org  – 3 sessions on 3 different days

September 3rd – 9th

Parents, please have your child arrive 5-10 minutes early to class, if possible.  I know that traffic causes issues, however, we lost quite a bit of learning time today with students arriving after 9 AM.  It is Week 2 and the syllabus is already off schedule.
Today we worked on measuring to the nearest inch, rectangles and ordering numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least.
HOMEWORK: (ONLY 3 WORKBOOK PAGES THIS WEEK  –  5B, 6B, & 7B)
Meeting Strips and Workbook Pages
  • Complete Day 6 Meeting Strip and move onto the 5B side of the workbook page.  Parents, please grade the workbook page.
  • Complete Day 7 Meeting Strip and move onto the 6B side of the workbook page. Parents, please grade the workbook page.
  • Complete Day 8 Meeting Strip and move onto the 7B side of the workbook page.  Parents, please grade the workbook page.
Flashcards
  • Complete 3 out of the 4 flashcard practices in the blue flashcard holder to earn a star.  New green cards were added in class today.
  •  Log into XTRAmath.org for 3 sessions on 3 different days.  If your child completes two sessions on one day, my report shows it only as one session.  Everyday that your child completes a session, they earn a star for their chart.  If your child wants to complete more than 3 days, they may do so.
  • Wednesdays start the new week for XTRAmath.org.  I print out the report by 8 PM on Tuesday night.
  • It was brought to my attention that the games that follow the completed session are not aligned with our class at this time.  I will look into it and see if I can adjust the games to meet the needs of your child.  This feature is new this year, so I need to learn more about it.
Have a blessed week.

August 27th – September 2nd

PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD BRING A RULER TO CLASS ON SEPTEMBER 3RD.

Today was a wonderful first day!  We covered routines and completed lessons 1-4.

Lesson 1 will not have any homework.  We went through the weekly routine and completed the Meeting Strip together.

Flash Cards – Contained in the blue pencil bag in white binder.

  • In the front mesh pocket, there is a card with times and instructions for flash card practice.  This should be done as a warm-up for math practice.
  • Please initial the boxes on the card when the practice has been completed.

Meeting Strips and Workbook Pages – Day 1 was completed together to show how to fill out the Meeting Strip. No Lesson 1 workbook page.

  • Complete Day 2 Meeting Strip and move onto the 2B side of the workbook page.  The questions and patterns are on the stapled page behind the Meeting Strip page.  Some parts of the Meeting Strip are crossed out.  As we cover more topics, you will see less crossed out portions on the strip.  Parents, please grade the workbook page.
  • Complete Day 3 Meeting Strip and move onto the 3B side of the workbook page.  Parents, please grade the workbook page.
  • Complete Day 4 Meeting Strip and move onto the 4B side of the workbook page. Parents, please grade the workbook page.

XTRAmath.org sign-up/log-in sheet was in the front pocket in the white binder.  Please have your child complete 3 sessions on 3 different days.

Students will need to bring back the white binder with:

  • flashcards and initialed direction card in blue pencil bag
  • Meeting Strip Pages
  • corrected workbook pages

Students will receive stars on their chart for completed items above.  Once checked, your child will put their work in their math folder, not the binder.  Students will also receive stars for each completed session of XTRAmath.org.

I will replace the flashcard notecard and add flashcards to the blue pencil bag in the white binder.  New Meeting Strip pages for Days 5-8 and corresponding workbook pages will be placed in the white binder.   The white binder will need to be in class each week and returned home containing the week’s work.

I know that this was a lot of information.  It will take time to develop the routine.  If you and/or your child are struggling with any portion of math, please reach out.  You can email me with details and I will do my best to reply by the following business day.  This week, I will be out of town this weekend and will not be able to respond to emails until Tuesday due to the Labor Day holiday.

HOMEWORK LIST:

  • Flashcards
  • Meeting Strips
  • Workbook Pages
  • XTRAmath.org – 3 sessions on 3 different days

Have a wonderful holiday weekend week!
