Chemistry Lab for Monday, Feb. 3rd: We covered a lot of information today. You need to review the lab on properties of solutions. Review all the terms and background information provided and also review the answers to the conclusion questions. You will need to know how various factors affect the solubility of solids, liquids, and gases.
For the lab we performed – Freezing Point Depression – you need to make sure that your data is clearly recorded. You also need to create or finish the required graph of your data. Go through the conclusion questions and answer anything that you have the information for. Be sure to review the final question and have it completed by next Monday. We will discuss the math portion of the experiment next week in lab and wrap up the details before you turn in the lab.
Chemistry Lecture for Wednesday, January 29th: Well the snow day on the 22nd will require us to adjust our schedule a bit. All the information for the 22nd can be applied for this week and we will discuss any necessary adjustments.
Chemistry Lecture for Wednesday, January 22nd: We finished Module 9 this week – so you need to work through the study guide for the Module 9 test. We will have some time in class to go over the study guide and review any concepts you might need assistance with. We are moving into Module 10 on Solutions. You need to refer to your syllabus – read all of Module 10 and begin the module work. Some videos to entertain and assist with Module 10 concepts.
Chemistry Lab for Monday, January 20th – Remember that classes will not take place on Monday the 20th. Enjoy the Presidential Inauguration and your time off. Check your homework email for the experiment that you need to perform at home. You do NOT need to print off the lab – I will provide printed copies when we return – but you do need to record your data and results. If you have soda or other carbonated beverages at home you should perform that part of the experiment. If you do not have carbonated beverages at home, then skip that part of the experiment. We will be discussing the concepts for awhile in class and will broach the behavior of gases as solutes in class. We will discuss your results when we meet again on the 27th.
Chemistry Lab for Monday, January 13th: It’s a new year and I will try to be more faithful to post information on the CPC website. The best place for homework information is still the homework emails that I send – so please, please always check your email!
The lab we performed on acids/bases and indicators will be due Monday, Jan. 13th. Do NOT complete the final question – we will be discussing that concept in class on Wednesday and again next week before turning in your lab.
Next week’s lab is performing a titration – you need to watch the video on titration technique before next Monday and be sure to read the entire module before next Monday.
Chemistry Lab for Monday, Nov. 11th: – If you did not turn in the lab on the single replacement reaction of Zn and HCl, then you need to wrap up your observations and questions. Posting some videos of the Hindenburg and exploding Hydrogen.
Chemistry Lab for Monday, Nov. 4th – Read back over the experiment on the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide that we completed today. Double check your observations – that they are clear and complete. We discussed almost all the conclusion questions but did not complete the final chemical reaction (D) on the last question. Complete any missing information.
You received next week’s lab – be sure to read it before next Monday. You will be working with hydrochloric acid, so be sure to wear appropriate clothing and bring your safety gear.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions or need help with anything.
Chemistry Lecture for Wed., Oct. 30th: We will be beginning Module 7 on types of chemical reactions and mass conservation concepts for reactions – introducing the Mole concept. You need to read ALL of Module 7 by Wed. the 30th and complete the OYO, RQ, and PP assigned in the syllabus. We are coming quickly to the end of the semester so I will be providing grade documents more frequently so you can stay current on any missing work, etc.
Please, please touch base with me if you need help with any of the concepts from this semester. The concepts form the foundation for all that we will tackle in the spring and you need to be “fluent” in chemistry for the rest of the year.
Chemistry Lecture for Wed., Oct. 23 rd: We will be wrapping up Module 6 and discussing chemical reactions – writing and balancing reactions. You need to complete ALL the work for Module 6 – it will be due on the 23rd. Don’t forget you also have the test over Modules 4 and 5 to complete.
Some helpful videos on chemical reactions.
Chemistry Lab for Monday, October 21st: You received your lab during lecture – please read through the lab before coming to class.

We will be performing a lab next Monday that introduces chemical changes – it will be smelly and we will break things – please bring your safety gear!! Lab will meet in our typical room.
Chemistry Lecture for Wed., Oct. 9th – refer to the email homework
Chemistry Lab for Monday, October 7th: You need to complete all aspects of the molecular modeling lab. Be sure to thoroughly check all the pre-lab questions on page 8 and double check all of the electron dot formulas to be sure your atoms have an octet of electrons – except for Hydrogen who only needs two electrons. We will be working with smelly chemicals next week – bring all your safety gear. Be sure to dress appropriately for lab with long pants and closed toed shoes.
Chemistry Lecture for Wednesday, October 2nd: We will begin Module 5, so you will need to read ALL of Module 5 by next Wednesday. I will bring the study guide for the test over Module 4 so you can begin reviewing. Remember that Module 4 and Module 5 will be combined into one test. As you review and practice Lewis Dot structures for molecules – I again recommend watching the Chad’s Prep video. You need to complete the OYO, RQ, and PP assigned for next week in the syllabus but ALL the module work is not due until the 8th.
Begin memorizing the polyatomic ions listed on page 175 – there are 14 of them and you need to memorize their formulas, charges, and names. You will have a quiz on October 8th. You also need to memorize the diatomic molecules – those elements that exist as molecules in their natural forms – Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and the Halogens. They will show up on your test over Modules 4&5.
As we venture into Lewis Dot structures I recommend this video from Chad’s Prep. Chad is a tutor at Arizona State University and he is excellent. This video will cover everything you need to know (and some that is extra :) about forming covalent bonds in molecules.
Chemistry Lab for Monday, September 30th: You need to read the entire lab packet that you received in class today. You need to complete the Pre-lab section on page 8. We will continue building the models next week and will address the sections on valence electrons, structural formula, and Lewis Dot diagrams.
Chemistry Lecture for Wednesday, September 25th: The first item of homework is the test over Module 3. Be sure to schedule with your proctor and don’t neglect to call me if you have any questions while taking the test. If prior to taking the test you have any concerns over calculations for wavelength, frequency or energy or of the other concepts for the test – I am happy to review with you through zoom. Just let me know. The only other homework currently is to complete the work for Module 4. ALL the Module 4 work will be due next week. In our discussion during class we talked about chemical families (or groups) on the Periodic Table and I am posting some videos that highlight chemical family activity. The video from the Royal Academy of Science is long but so excellent. It is worth watching.
Okay Lab students :) – my daughter sent me this link for an instagram post that is all about lab safety. It’s from the same group as one of the videos on naming the elements on the periodic table. It was too good not to pass on :)

Chemistry Lab for Monday, Sept. 23rd: For next Monday you need to complete both labs that you have – the lab on separating mixtures and the lab on flame testing metal ions. We will spend a little time in lab next week discussing your results and answering any questions you might have as we didn’t have much class time for discussion today. You also need to complete the lab homework that you received today – the one with the picture of a distillation on the front.
Next week we begin a lab that will take two weeks to complete. You will be building models of molecules and then diagramming the molecule. You need to bring a good pencil, a better eraser and your colored pencils. There will not be a need for safety equipment.
Here are some videos that pertain to the lab on flame testing – all about the light emitted from atoms as their electrons change energy levels. You should compare their colors to the colors that you saw in lab.
As we approach the patterns in the periodic table – here are some videos “for fun”. This first one is all the names of the elements on the periodic table in order and includes a little information about the patterns in the table that we will be discussing Wed. 9/18.
This video is all the names of the elements sung to the tune of “I am the Model of a Modern Major General” from the Pirates of Penzance – by Gilbert and Sullivan.
Chemistry Lecture for Wednesday, Sept. 18th: We have completed Module 3 and next week you will go home with the test. I have emailed a copy of the study guide for the test and I will bring printed copies to lab on Monday. If you are not in lab, I recommend printing out the study guide and completing it before next Wednesday. I have included two crash course videos – one on the nucleus of atoms and one on electrons. Both videos are short – about 10 minutes and they review the material in Module 3.
Next Wednesday we begin Module 4 and you need to read the Module and perform the work assigned in the syllabus.
If you need any assistance with the concepts from Module 3 – please reach out and we can zoom tutor or schedule some time during lunches next week.
Chemistry Lab for Monday, Sept. 16th: We will wrap up the lab on separating mixtures by completing Procedure #2. We will also conduct the Flame Test Lab – be sure to bring all your safety gear. We will need to move quickly to complete both labs. You need to complete all the lab data and questions dealing with procedures #1 and #3 on your “Separating Mixtures” lab from today.

You need to complete your test over Modules 1&2 – be sure to schedule with your proctor so that you have plenty of time to work the test before Tuesday night! You should schedule an hour for your test – you may not need all that time, but it is better to be prepared.
You need to complete the chart of scientists with their experiments and contributions to our current understanding of atomic theory.
If you have not already done so – you need to complete all the work for Module 3.
At any point if you have questions or need any assistance processing the math involved with Module 3 or any of the concepts – please let me know and we can tutor by zoom or arrange a time during lunch when we are together.
Atomic Structure Videos – including experiments and scientists. There is not a special order that these need to be viewed in. I recommend the Crash Course video first as it is an excellent overview of the the various discoveries of our current atomic theory.
Chemistry Lecture, Wednesday, September 4th: We will not have lab due to Labor Day but we will be in lecture on Wednesday. You need to work through the study guide for the test over Modules 1&2. I recommend using the tests that came with your solutions manual to practice with for your test. Take them and check them and see if you need any reinforcement on any of the concepts. We will have some time in class to go over the study guide and answer any final questions that you may have.
Read ALL of Module 3 and perform the work for module 3 as assigned in your syllabus.
Keep an eye out for the series of videos that will be assigned.
Chemistry Lab, Monday, September 9th: Remember that the lab class will not meet next week due to the Labor Day holiday. We will resume lab class the following week on Sept. 9th. On the 9th both the long lab write up for the first experiment and the “fill – in – the blank” lab from yesterday will be due. Please carefully read the assigned lab on separating mixtures- it is time consuming and we will need to get right on it to complete it in time. Come ready to work when we get back to lab.
Chemistry Lecture, Wed. Aug. 28th: All the work from Module 2 is due. You can earn extra credit by checking your own work. The answers to the On Your Own questions are found at the end of the module and the solutions manual has the answers to the Review Questions and Practice Problems. I need to see evidence of your corrections for extra credit. If you have the spiral bound book that has the OYO, RQ,PP and other lovely things to accompany your text – simply do the work in that book and just bring the book when the work is due – I will check your work in the book.
Also wrap up the worksheet you received in class on Ionic vs Covalent Compounds. It is due for a grade the 28th.
If you have not read the syllabus nor printed it out – please, please do both. Keep a copy of the syllabus in your notebook.
Chemistry Lab, Monday, August 26th: You need to begin working on your lab report for the experiment on Conservation of Mass. Bring a rough draft to lab on the 26th. The completed report will be due on September 9th (we don’t meet for lab on Sept. 2nd as it is the Labor Day holiday). Read through experiment #3 for next Monday and come prepared to work as beautifully as you did yesterday. Don’t forget to wear appropriate shoes and clothing for lab.
Chemistry Lecture, Wednesday, August 21: You will have the quiz over the first 30 elements on the Periodic Table – be sure you have memorized the symbol, name (correctly spelled), and atomic number for the elements. Also – ALL of the work for Module 1 is due – ALL the On Your Own Questions (OYO), all the Review Questions (RQ) and all the Practice Problems (PP). You were also assigned to read Module 2 and come prepared to discuss the concepts and work the first half of each section of work.
Chemistry Lab Monday, August 19: Come prepared with paper to record data on, your safety gear and a willingness to work. Lab homework will always be printed in blue and italic font – hopefully that makes it easy to differentiate from lecture.

I am including some helpful videos on Lewis Dot Structures – you will become proficient with time :). All the Module 4 work is due next week.
And my favorite – Hank on Crash Course Chemistry…..
A helpful article on the emission spectra of elements. Includes a discussion of how spectroscopy can determine the elements in stars and in addition how scientists have decided that the universe is expanding. https://chem.libretexts.org/Courses/Anoka-Ramsey_Community_College/Introduction_to_Chemistry/10%3A_Electrons_in_Atoms/10.03%3A_Emission_Spectra
Chemistry Lab Homework for Monday, September 25,2023: You need to do a little research and find two uses for spectroscopy. We discussed in class how spectroscopes can be used to determine what elements are being produced in stars – you should probably verify that information :). If you would like to revise your first lab report – I would be happy for you to do so. Some of you need only attach the original data table as requested and some of you may want to modify your report based on feedback on the grading rubric and your work. I will take the revised version at any point that you have it ready – as long as it’s not after Thanksgiving :). I would encourage you to browse a few more YouTube videos on flame testing of elements – there are some very cool videos out there.
Chemistry Lecture Homework for Wednesday, September 20,2023: First important item of homework is your test over Modules 1&2. Monday’s lab will be time consuming so come ready to get to work – we will be meeting in our usual room.
Begin reading Module 3 and preparing the assignment from the syllabus. As we discussed yesterday we will be completing the final lab for Module 2 this coming Monday and then in lecture on Wednesday we will transition to Module 3. Due to time constraints I am planning on having you take the first test -over Modules 1 and 2 – at home, but future tests will take place during our lab time.
Chemistry Lecture Homework for Wed., Sept. 7th: There are three labs for Module 2 and I feel like they are all important – so next Wed we will be performing the lab that you received in class yesterday. We will continue to discuss Module 2 concepts through the lab. Come to class prepared to perform the lab – so bring all your lab wear. Your lab report from the first lab and the lab we performed this past week on Conservation of Mass will both be due next Wed the 7th. The worksheet we worked on dealing with Ionic and Covalent compound formulas and names will be due next Wednesday as well. AND (as if that’s not enough) You will need to read Module 3 and begin the work assigned in the syllabus. I hope you have a good holiday :).
Chemistry Lab Homework for the week of Labor Day, Sept. 5th: You need to complete the lab you performed yesterday. Double check your data and make sure you used appropriate significant figures and that all your values have units. Answer any remaining questions and have your lab ready to turn in on Wednesday Sept. 7th. We do not meet for classes on Labor Day – Monday, September 5th so we won’t have lab that week. Be sure that you are checking your homework email for any additional details. Your lab report for the first lab will also be due on Wednesday the 7th. No one had me examine their rough drafts yesterday – if you have any concerns or questions be sure you ask about them tomorrow in lecture.
Chemistry Lecture Homework for Wed., Aug. 31st: We will be wrapping up Module 2 so ALL the work from the text will be due. Remember to check it and correct it for extra credit. Be working on you lab report for the first lab – we will look over your rough drafts and make corrections for an excellent final product. I recommend reading through Module 2 for a second time – make notes for yourselves over important terms, etc.
Chemistry Lab Homework for Monday, August 29th: Come with your lab safety wear! We will be working with sodium hydroxide and it is caustic. If your hair is long enough you will need to bring a hair tie to keep your hair out of the chemicals. Read through next week’s lab so that you are familiar with the procedures that you will be performing. In lecture we will discuss how to write up the lab report for yesterday’s lab. You received a measurement worksheet in lab and it will be due next Monday, the 29th.
Chemistry Lecture Homework for Wednesday, August 24, 2022: You have a quiz first thing over the first 30 elements on the Periodic Table – be sure to practice with the sample quizzes you were provided. We will be discussing a little of Module 1 and the first part of Module 2.
Chemistry Lab Homework for Monday, August 22, 2022: Bring all required lab supplies to class. Be studying the first 30 elements of the periodic table for your quiz in lecture.

Chemistry Lecture Homework for Monday, January 24th: Be sure to always check your email – it is the main source of information for your upcoming assignments and any class news. We will be wrapping up Module 9 on Acids and Bases. Your test over Module 9 is scheduled for Wed. the 26th during the final hour of lab, so we will use time on Monday the 24th for any remaining questions you may have. We will begin Module 10 on Solutions – check your spring syllabus for the assigned module work. The lab on acid and base indicators and pH that we performed today will be due on Monday the 24th, along with the acid/base worksheet you received by email.
Chemistry Lecture Homework for Monday, Oct. 18th: There are lots of important upcoming dates and events – be sure to check your email!!!!
Next Monday you will have a quiz over the polyatomic ions listed in the table on page 175 of your text. You will need to know the name, charge, and chemical formula for each ion. The quiz will take place during the first 15min of lecture.
In class today you received the Compound Scavenger Hunt project. It is due on Wed.,Oct. 27th, the same day as your test over Modules 4 and 5. We will be wrapping up module 5 next week – your work from Module 6 will be due in its entirety on Monday the 25th of October.
The posted videos are to assist with determining whether or not a molecule is polar. You will have to identify the polar characteristics of molecules on your Mod.4/5 test – so I recommend watching them.
Chemistry Lab Homework for Wednesday, Oct. 13th: You will need to complete the pre-lab questions on page 8 of Lab #6 on Molecular Models. Bring lab #6 to lecture on Monday as we will be continuing to discuss Lewis Dot Structures and adding additional information to the lab about the polarity and geometry of the molecules you “built”.
Next Wed in lab you will need your lab safety wear as we will be performing Lab #7 Comparing and Contrasting Ionic and Covalent compounds.
Chemistry Lecture Homework for Monday, Oct.11th: We will be discussing Module 5 next Monday so you will need to complete ALL the Module 5 work – all the OYO,RQ, and PP. Be sure to bring Lab #6 on Molecular Models to lecture on the 11th.
Chemistry Lab Homework for Wednesday, Oct. 6th: (1)Prepare for the test over Module 3 – you will be taking it during the last hour of lab. (2) watch the video over the periodic table and complete the 91 questions that go with it – it is due on Wed. the 6th in lab. (3) Color the molecular models that you diagrammed in lab today-you will want the extra credit. That seems like enough to keep you occupied until next Wed. :).
Chemistry Lecture Homework for Monday, Oct 4th: (1) Watch the video from the Royal Institute and answer the accompanying questions. This is a presentation that your family may also find interesting. I recommend watching the video all the way through first, then re-watching it to answer the questions. It is helpful to add the subtitles or turn on the dialogue so you can pause the video to answer the questions. This is a good week as you will not have much lab homework. Remember, the video is 90min (1 and 1/2hrs) so DO NOT WAIT until Tuesday the 5th to watch it. The questions are due on Wednesday the 6th of October in lab. If you want to watch it directly on YouTube -search Royal Institute Periodic Table. We are a bit behind in completing Module 4 – so you can work on the Module 5 assignment in the syllabus but we won’t be discussing it until lab or lecture on Monday the 10th of October.
Chemistry Lab Homework for Wednesday, Sept. 29th: Bring Lab #5 Flame Tests to lecture on Monday. We will discuss your results and work through “the math” associated with Module 3 and this lab. The following videos relate to the lab and the conclusion questions and one of the videos shows the expected flame color for potassium that we were not able to achieve. There is a link to an article that assists with the final conclusion question for the lab.
(1) Recommended article describing applications of spectroscopy – the final question on Lab#5 – Flame Tests. https://www.britannica.com/science/spectroscopy/Applications
Chemistry Lecture Homework for Monday, Sept. 27th: In some ways this might be an easy homework week – all that needs to be accomplished is to read ALL of Module 4 and perform ALL the work from the module. ALL the OYO,RQ and PP will be due on Monday the 27th.
Chemistry Lab Homework for Wednesday, Sept. 22nd: (1) Complete the lab on Separating Mixtures. Bring the lab to lecture class on Monday as we will discuss your results and wrap up the questions. (2) Complete the Lab Homework on Mixtures (has a diagram of a distillation apparatus on the front page). We will discuss this homework as well in lecture on Monday.
Both of these items will be due in lab on Wed. but I want you to have them corrected and available to study with for your test on Wed. Remember your first test will be in lab during the final hour. You need to be well prepared!!!
Don’t forget to complete the chart from the posted videos – it is due on Monday. You can postpone the Module 4 work assigned in the syllabus. We won’t make it to Mod. 4 as we need to wrap up Mod 3 on Monday. As always – let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Chemistry Lecture Homework for Monday, Sept.20th: Review Module 3 and be sure to ask questions about anything you might still be confused about from Module 3. We will discuss more concepts next Monday before we move into Module 4. You will need to complete the Module 4 homework assigned in the syllabus, but I will not collect the work until Monday, September 27 at the completion of Module 4. You received a chart about scientists and their atomic structure discoveries last week in lab. You will need to watch the assigned videos and complete the chart by next Monday. If you include scientists from the videos in addition to the ones listed on the chart, you will earn extra credit on the assignment.
Chemistry Lab Homework for Wednesday, Sept. 15th: (1) Wrap up all details on Lab#3. Read back through your answers and make sure they are clear, concise, and thorough. As we went over everything during lab – hopefully you don’t have much to complete. (2) Begin work on the study guide for the first test. The first test will take place during the final hour of lab on Wed., Sept, 22nd. We will meet three times before then so come with questions prepared!!!
Monday and Wednesday next week we will have emergency drills – so wear shoes you can hike in!!! This may cause our lab #4 to have to be extended. Come prepared next week to work as rapidly and safely as possible to be able to finish lab #4 in one class period.
Chemistry Lab Homework for Wednesday, Sept. 8th: (1) Finish the final question on the Lab Measurement worksheet – that is the sheet with the diagrams of metric rulers and graduated cylinders. You need to answer the final question based on the author’s recommendations from Module 1. (2) Review Lab #2: Conservation of Mass – make sure your answers are clear and concise and check all your numerical data to be sure you provided units along with your numbers. (3) Complete the worksheet on identifying and naming ionic and covalent compounds. (4) Read Lab#3 on Identifying Ionic and Covalent Compounds that we will be performing next week.
Thank you for doing such a great job in lab this week -you all were excellent in your safe handling of the lye. When you follow instructions well and make safe choices it allows us to perform even more complicated labs – I am grateful and proud of you! I hope you all have a great holiday.
