Course Description: Kindergarten should be a time of fun and gentle learning through hands-on activities and play. We will cover phonics, math, science, and social studies in a manner that helps each child develop their curiosity and love of learning. We will begin each morning with a small Bible lesson before moving into our main subjects.
Students will begin to learn letter recognition, letter sounds, and finish the year reading simple short-vowel words and sentences using weekly games and activities. We will begin sight words, which will continue through second grade. We will also learn introductory grammar and lay the groundwork for creative writing by learning together how to tell an original story effectively.
Kindergarten math covers shapes, patterns, numbers to 100, counting, comparisons, addition/subtraction, as well as an introduction to money, measuring, time and the calendar. Class time will be spent using a hands-on approach with math manipulations to visualize the skills needed to complete the work at home. Concepts will be built using BJU Press Math K5 with the goal of having a firm foundation for higher level elementary math and beyond.
Science will focus on learning about the world around them, focusing on plants and animals in a variety of habitats, and using hands-on experiments & demonstrations to present the concepts in a child-friendly manner.
Social Studies/Geography will begin with learning about our place within our family and continue getting broader as the weeks go by, learning about our community, country, and world. We will supplement this learning with hands-on crafts in class, map skills, and a variety of books.
Class time will also include Show & Tell, story time, creative/play time, as well as lunch for additional social interaction.
Homework will be sent weekly detailing daily activities so that full content mastery can be achieved, as well as optional fun activities each week detailing concepts learned in class for those wishing to further explore. Material will be sent home in order to make completing activities easy and fun! For students to get the most out of class time, students should try to complete as much weekly work as possible. Additional resources will also be provided each week, such as books, educational tv episodes or movies, sensory activities, and field trips etc. My hope is to come alongside you and be a resource to help your children be as successful as possible.
A family read aloud book will also be optional each semester. The kindergarten read aloud books are My Father’s Dragon and The Mouse and the Motorcycle.
