Course Description: First Grade will provide a chance for students to begin practicing the skills and confidence they learned in KG and covering such topics as language arts, math, science, and history/social studies. We will begin each morning with a small Bible lesson before moving into our main subjects.

Students in first grade should already be able to read short-vowel words and some consonant blends, and by the end of the year will have moved to reading more complex texts. We will be using games, songs, and books to continue our language arts skills. We will also have a daily reading requirement, using a variety of readers. Readers can be used from home or borrowed from the in-class library. A foundation in writing will continue using Essentials in Writing Level 1.

First grade math continues number sense learning, more complex addition/subtraction, 2D & 3D shapes, measuring, money, time, calendar and beginning mental math. Class time will be spent using a hands-on approach with math manipulations to visualize the skills needed to complete the work at home. Concepts will be built using BJU Press Math 1 with the goal of having a firm foundation for higher level elementary math and beyond.

Science will cover a variety of topics under physical and earth science, astronomy, and geology, using hands-on experiments, demonstrations, and sensory projects to present the concepts in a child-friendly manner.

History/geography will walk chronologically through World History, highlighting the main events and people. We will add in geography as it coincides to reinforce our history lesson. A mix of story time, art and craft time, and a class timeline and map to solidify understanding of the chronology of the people & events that are discussed will also be used.

Class time will also include Show & Tell, story time, creative/play time, as well as lunch for additional social interaction.

Homework will be sent weekly detailing daily activities so that full content mastery can be achieved, as well as optional fun activities each week detailing concepts learned in class for those wishing to further explore. Material will be sent home in order to make completing activities easy and fun! For students to get the most out of class time, students should try to complete as much weekly work as possible. Additional resources will also be provided each week, such as books, educational tv episodes or movies, sensory activities, and field trips etc. My hope is to come alongside you and be a resource to help your children be as successful as possible.

A family read aloud book will also be optional each semester and one over Christmas. The first grade read aloud books are Adventures of a South Pole Pig, Little House in the Big Woods, and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.
