Course Description: In this class, BJU Press Heritage Studies 5: History of America (5th edition) guides students through a chronological exploration of American history—from early Native cultures to the 2024 election—using engaging stories, activities, and biblical integration. Students develop historical thinking skills as they analyze sources, explore key themes like freedom and equality, and connect past events to a biblical worldview. Your child will not only learn to love history, but they will be honing their writing, observational, interpersonal, and critical-thinking skills through map-work, writing opportunities on each test, exciting in-class activities, and some basic public speaking practice with their end-of-the-semester project. Students should expect to spend anywhere from 1-3 hours a week working on any assignments given, which will include: reading, homework page activities from the workbook, and a semester project. Grades are given through assignments from the Student Activity Manual, one at-home project each semester, in-class participation opportunities, and tests every 2 weeks. Parental involvement is always encouraged and will be necessary when proctoring tests that must be completed at home.
