Course Description: Second Grade will be a time of fun learning, continuing the theme of “learning to love learning” while adding a little more academic feel yet still remaining an engaging class. We will cover language arts, math, science, and history. We will use Sonlight’s Language Arts 2, which is a complete program of continued phonics instruction, spelling, grammar, and creative writing, taking students from writing simple sentences to full paragraphs. The primary reading text used will be The Beginner’s Bible, but parents are encouraged to supplement with additional “fun” reading at home; Mrs. V. is happy to help identify appropriate titles on request.

Second grade math teaches more complex addition & subtraction, as well as multiplication & division in an easy-to-understand format. Classroom instruction will rely heavily on math manipulatives, providing a hands-on way to learn the how & why of math rather than just memorize math facts, and will use Singapore Primary Math 2A & 2B.

Science will cover several different topics, using hands-on experiments & demonstrations to present the concepts in a child-friendly manner. Students will keep a basic lab notebook to record our experiments as well. History/social studies will continue the chronological walk through history, picking up with King Richard & the Crusades (where 1st Grade leaves off), and continuing through World War II and the years just after, with a look at extra inventions/events of current times in the final weeks. We will use crafts and other activities in class to enhance learning. At home, students will complete a timeline and do map work to identify the where & when of people and events we learn about.

Class time will also include opportunities for story time, show & tell, play time/creative time, and includes lunch time for extra social interaction.

A weekly assignment schedule will be sent detailing the language arts and math work so that full content mastery can be achieved, as well as an optional “Try at Home” activity each week for science and history for those wishing to further explore the concepts learned about in class. Parents wishing to use a different math or language arts program than those requested may do so at their discretion, understanding that class time will follow the materials listed below. Students should be expected to work on assignments at home at least 3 days per week.
