Course Description: Second Grade will be a time of fun learning, continuing the theme of “learning to love learning” while adding a more academic feel, covering such topics as language arts, math, science, and history/social studies. We will begin each morning with a small Bible lesson before moving into our main subjects.

Students in second grade should already be able to read short chapter books and write small journal entries, with an understanding of basic sentence structure. We will be using games, songs, and books to continue our language arts skills. A foundation in writing will continue with Essentials in Writing Level 2. The primary reading text will be Little Pilgrim’s Progress. Readers can also be borrowed from the in-class library.

Second grade math teaches more complex addition and subtraction, as well as multiplication and division in an easy-to-understand format. Class time will be spent using a hands-on approach with math manipulatives to visualize the skills needed to complete the work at home. Saxon Math 2 will be used as we prepare for higher level math.

Science will cover a variety of topics under physical and earth science, anatomy, and astronomy, using hands-on experiments, demonstrations, and sensory projects to present the concepts in a child-friendly manner. Students will keep a basic lab notebook to record our experiments.

American History will be covered in second grade. We will use a mix of story time, art and craft time, and a class timeline and map to solidify understanding of the chronology of the people and events that are discussed.

Class time will also include Show & Tell, story time, creative/play time, as well as lunch for additional social interaction.

Homework will be sent weekly detailing daily activities so that full content mastery can be achieved, as well as optional fun activities each week detailing concepts learned in class for those wishing to further explore. Material will be sent home in order to make completing activities easy and fun! For students to get the most out of class time, students should try to complete as much weekly work as possible, working on assignments at least 3 days a week. Additional resources will also be provided each week, such as books, educational tv episodes or movies, sensory activities, and field trips etc. My hope is to come alongside you and be a resource to help your children be as successful as possible.

A family read aloud book will also be optional each semester including one over Christmas. The second grade read aloud books are Five Children and It, Stuart Little, and Heidi.
