Course Description: Kindergarten should be a time of fun, gentle learning and that is what this course provides. We will cover language arts, math, science, and history/social studies in a manner that helps each child learn to love learning. Students will learn letter recognition, letter sounds, and finish the year reading simple short-vowel words and sentences, using Sonlight’s K Language Arts program.
Kindergarten math covers shapes, numbers to 100, counting, comparisons, addition/subtraction, as well as an introduction to money, measuring, time, and the calendar. Class time will focus on teaching concepts using math manipulatives so that students understand the how and why of math, rather than simply memorize facts, and will use Singapore Math’s Earlybird Math Textbooks A& B.
Science will cover several different topics, using hands-on experiments and demonstrations to present the concepts in a child-friendly manner. History/social studies will similarly cover a wide variety of topics, including holidays, using a mix of story time and craft time.
Class time will also include opportunities for story time, show & tell, and play time/creative time. Students are invited to stay for lunch (11:30-12:00) and recess (12:00-12:30) for additional social interaction time as desired.
A weekly assignment schedule will be sent detailing the language arts and math work so that full content mastery can be achieved, as well as an optional “Try at Home” activity each week for science and history for those wishing to further explore the concepts learned in class. Parents wishing to use a different math or language arts program than those requested may do so at their discretion, understanding that class time will follow the materials listed below. Students should be expected to work on assignments at home at least 3 days per week.
