*Note: This class is designed for upper elementary (grade 3-5) but it is better to go by your child’s reading level and abilities.  Look at the list below to see if the books will be too challenging before signing up, as most are tailored to a third grade reading level.  You can also read with your child and make this a read aloud time if needed.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Course Description: This will be a fun interactive class where reading truly comes to life!  With a balanced literacy approach to reading, children will be working in groups to discover and learn through a variety of text.  In this class students will learn about the different genres of literature, story structure, and learn helpful strategies to comprehend what they are reading.  While in small groups, students will be able to discuss new vocabulary words, analyze characters, make connections to the text, visualize the story, and be able to ask and answer questions.  Weekly reading will be required, usually between 3-5 chapters, and they must be ready to discuss things with their groups in class.  This is a supplemental reading class, so other reading instruction for your child may be needed.
